Update - Thurs, 10:15 GMT: News from the official Guitar Hero Twitter account is now stating that DLC support will not go beyond the release of previously announced packs this month. It's all a bit fussy this topic, don't you think?

Update - Wed, 23:33 GMT: Guitar Hero dead? Maybe not. There’s a glimmer of hope for fans with Activision’s Dan Amrich launching a blog post, spotted by Nintendo Universe, clearing everything up.

“Guitar Hero DLC development will continue and the existing games will be supported, but there’s no new game coming in 2011,” he writes. “So, honestly…is that “death” or a much-needed break? For a while there I couldn’t drown out the cries of gamers on forums, blogs, and Twitter saying GH should take some time off, and from all appearances, that’s what this is.

“Step back, let it breathe for a while, don’t make any major plans, and see what happens in the future.”

Original - Wed, 22:14 GMT: In its latest financial report, Activision has tonight announced its decision to kill off the incredibly popular Guitar Hero franchise. The same report brings news that the further development and release of United Front’s True Crime: Hong Kong has been called off.

The publisher says the axe of Guitar Hero comes “due to continued declines in the music genre,” with “the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world's best interactive entertainment experiences“ also aiding both decisions.

Guitar Hero was first introduced to the world in 2005, and whilst many instalments of the series sold extremely well, the latest, Warriors of Rock, didn’t do so good. Meanwhile, True Crime: Hong Kong would have seen the first title from the franchise in six years.
