A feature film adaptation of Techland and Deep Silver’s recent video game release Dead Island has today been announced to be in development.
Following the release of the game’s brilliant debut trailer – which went viral – back in February this year, entertainment company Lionsgate has picked up the optioned film rights for the zombie RPG adventure.
Sean Daniel, the producer of the Mummy franchise, will spearhead production through his Sean Daniel Company, along with Stefan Sonnenfeld.
“Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck,” said Joe Drake, Lionsgate co-COO and Motion Picture Group President.
“This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate – it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.”
Dead Island launched for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on September 6.
