With Mass Effect 3 being the cover title for next months GameInformer issue new details for the game were inevitable but the first proper information on it coming this soon is a suprise.

Please not the rest of the article contains spoilers for the game as well as the rest of the series.

Mass Effect 3 will begin with Shepard on Earth on trial in regard to the events of Arrival DLC pack for Mass Effect 2 but during the middle of the trial the Reapers invade. The prologue then sees Shepard escape to the Normandy, and off to start finding allies to fight off Reaper troops which now are all different species of husk.

Confirmed squad mates for ME3 are Liara, Ashley or Kaiden (depending on your choice from the first game), Garrus (if he's alive) and a yet unmet character James Sanders. Also confirmed to appear (but not guaranteed to be in your squad) are Wrex, Mordin, Legion, and Anderson. If you're jumping straight into Mass Effect 3 without having played either of the previous games the game will default to a "previously on Mass Effect" comic (as seen on the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2) to make decisions.

The Illusive Man also returns in Mass Effect 3 plays a prominent role with Cerberus out to kill Shepard. Good news to those who moaned the demise of the RPG elements of the first game in Mass Effect 2 as they're going to be beefed up for the third game but will not be going back to ME1 levels. Skill trees will be larger, and powers will evolve several times instead of just once, offering even more freedom. Weapons are ME2 style with a set list, and mods also make a return, not in the ME1 style, but allowing you to swap out different parts such as barrels, scopes, and so on, which effect both the weapon's combat performance and its appearance. All classes can wield all weapons unhindered now, but will have limited slots to carry them. Only the Soldier can carry all weapons at once.

As you'd expect Mass Effect 3 will have numerous different good and bad endings depending on your choices throughout the game and indeed the series. Also confirmed is the fact that there will be no multiplayer for Mass Effect 3 but there is talk about future games and/or spinoffs having it present.

Mass Effect 3 launches winter 2011 on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
