Looking back on the PlayStation Network outage

A matter of forgive but don't forget?

Tonight, Sony has announced a restoration process for the PlayStation Network. After nearly a month of waiting and more than a handful of headlines it seems the network is secure and ready to support online multiplayer and several other services that gamers have missed.

As many of you are aware, it has been a difficult time for PlayStation gamers, after the PSN went down and stayed that way for more than a week the situation ended up getting much worse. It was then announced that user information including login information and credit card details had been compromised during the security breach.

All across the social outlets of the Internet, frustrated Sony customers and even the company itself spent most of the downtime searching for a guilty party. Anonymous who had worn out the PSN servers just before the breach were quickly looked to as responsible for the outage, and even though the group made attempts to disclaim the attack it’s nearly impossible to disprove due to the nature of the group.

For some, the outage was enough for them to trade in their offline PlayStation 3’s and replace them with an Xbox 360. Many of the gamers who took this route were from the “hardcore online shooter crowd” according to Edge Magazine.

Kaz Hirai’s latest announcement claims that the network is much more secure, but no network is entirely safe from attack. Sony promises to improve its security methods as well as roll out an apology package of content to all users. What that content might exactly be is still yet to be announced. Sony Entertainment Online, which also suffered from major outages this month, will be compensating subscribers by offering extended services to make up for the time lost.

For many gamers across America and Europe who should soon receive service if they haven’t already, it’s back to business. But how will this event affect gaming and online services in the future? Perhaps this whole mess is just the wake up call that Sony needs to rethink many of their strategies in how they interact with their customers.

One thing that’s for sure, it’s doubtful many PlayStation gamers will forget all of this overnight. No matter how much Sony tried to reconcile the downtime there are players who have firmly decided to change their platform of choice, how will their shift alter the market in the future?

Who in their right mind is going to exchange a PS3 for another platform? I'm sure this is just competitor's PR garbage from paid industry bloggers and insiders. If someone has seriously exchanged their PS3 they will regret it instantly when they try to stream HD video from their home network because the PS3 has the needed 1Gb ethernet, unlike the XBox. The most the XBox is capable of is 10-12Mb/second, not good enough for the 20-30Mb/second needed for streaming HD/Blu-Ray.

Hi switch2312 - I'm in Edinburgh and my PSN access appears to be working: it's doing a system update just now which is taking a while, I'll post and let you know what I've got once done...

D'oh, false alarm! Still same old after the update.

You do realize that whilst the ps3 is capable of 1gb Ethernet, it hardly ever reaches those speeds.Instead, most of the time the bottleneck occurs with the telephone line which most of the time isn't even capable of 5Mb/s speeds. As a result, it is evident that the xbox 360's 100Mb/s is more than capable for streaming movies.

hi Switch. a new update has been released as Dovemuck said. so You need to update when you get back, then it's just a matter of waiting till the network is back up.. You'll then be prompted to change Your password before logging in. seeing as the update has been released, I shouldn't think it will be too long before it's working again... see You online! big_boo_

the reason your Mates in Glasgow couldn't get on was because the network was overloaded with people trying to reset passwords, and it shut down again for a while. I'm guessing the new map pack will be out around June 3rd...I've already got it on Xbox, and IMO, I'm not too impressed with any of the new maps..whether I'll get to like them after a while is anyone's guess. as for the free stuff, probably a free downloadable game, or a free month of PS plus...not too sure. it varies by region anyway.well, at least by the time You get back, everything should be running smoothly, so You should get back online without too much trouble.. good luck, and see You online soon xxxx

Im from manchester and i updated saturday morning. Today 15/5 i was pleasantly surprised 2 find the psn allowed me to sign in,after changing password of course. Im now trying 2 get online to play uc2 but it wont connect, sync error, file error etc etc,im just having no joy actually getting into a game. Any ideas guys? Is possibly teething problems with the new update? Its defo not my internet connection as its ethernet min 8mbps pings round about 55-60.

after reading Your post, I loaded up My copy of UC2, and found the same problem. TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK what I did: on the Ps3 desktop, go to the game icon, scroll to the top and open GAME UTILITIES folder. delete Your UC2 data (NOT YOUR GAME SAVE DATA)... run the game and You will need to do 9 updates..this might take a while, so it's up to You.. the biggest update file is 118Mb, then a 90 something, a 40 something, then mostly 15MB ones. it should say update 1.09. once that's all done I found I could get to matchmaking (although I couldn't find any players). You could try syncing Your trophies first, as that might solve the problem. I love this game, but it seems to take ages to get online, so I don't play multiplayer much. JUST MAKE SURE YOU DON'T DELETE YOUR SAVE GAME FILE BY MISTAKE (make sure you go to GAME DATA UTILITY) I ran the game three times afterwards, and it failed once, but worked twice, so it's up to You...hope that helps.
