Not the same beast many have been led to believe.

After being rumoured to being close to the equal of the PlayStation 3 for graphical grunt Sony has said at GDC that NGP will be around "halfway" between PSP and the PS3 in  terms of power.

David Coombes, platform research manager at Sony Computer Entertainment America, told Kotaku "Some people in the press have said 'Wow, this thing could be as powerful as a PS3. Well, it's not going to run at 2 GHz because the battery would last five minutes... and it would probably set fire to your pants."

Coombes went on to touch on the hardware of NGP stating it was more akin to traditional console architecture with four symmetrical cores in contrast to the Cell in the PS3 with one PPE on the core and seven physical SPEs of which six are used for graphical rendering.

He went on to say that NGP would have "a lot of memory compared to the PSP" (which had 32MB RAM originally and 64MB RAM from the 2000 onwards) but wouldn't be specific on an actual amount, only that it was closer to the amount of RAM the PS3 has which is 512MB split equally across the GPU and main system memory.

Games for NGP will be stored on 2GB or 4GB flash memory cards, which also have an unspecified amount of writable memory.
