3D technology is unlikely to play a big part of Nintendo’s next home console due to the difficulty of bringing the technology into living rooms without the need of special glasses, the platform holder has said.

The company has just launched its 3DS handheld – a 3D device without the need of the special glasses – in Japan, Europe and North America, and sales are so far impressive. Bringing glasses-free 3D to home consoles seems a little out of reach at the moment however – something recognised and highlighted by Nintendo EAD development head Hideki Konno.

"I think at Nintendo, we realize that any sort of goggle-type 3-D technology was not going to work," he said during a CNN interview. "In order to make 3-D technology viable with video games, we thought we needed to have glasses-free 3-D."

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime added his comments, confirming that the technology is unlikely to be a big focus: “We've not said publicly what the next thing for us will be in the home console space, but based on what we've learned on 3-D, likely, that won't be it."

It’s unknown when Nintendo plans to unleash its next iteration of home console, though it is known to be in development. Fils-Aime has previously stated that another 15 million Wii units need to be sold before any conversation on the next generation begins.
