Square Enix has today announced Sleeping Dogs, the United Front Games title formerly known as True Crime: Hong Kong, for release later this year.

The game is still in development at United Front – despite an axing from former publisher Activision in February – but is being worked on collaboratively with Square Enix London Studios.

Players are to take on the role of undercover cop Wei Shen in an open-world Hong Kong, with the task of taking down the Triads from the inside. It sounds as if close combat, shooting and driving become requirements for Shen as he aims to get the better of the fearsome criminal organisation.

Lee Singleton, General Manager at Square Enix London Studios, today claimed Sleeping Dogs features "one of the best melee combat systems out there".

"It’s super brutal with devastating takedown moves, and when added to UFG’s proven heritage in driving games, a first class story and the vibrant backdrop of the Hong Kong underworld we get a fiery recipe with fun written all over it."

Sleeping Dogs is set to hit PS3, Xbox 360 and PC sometime in the second half of 2012. Check out a few new screenshots below.
